Lock picking

I've been thinking lately that having a lock picking set would be a good addition to my preps. Do any of you know anything about lock picking sets?

I was looking at the 32 and 62 piece sets at the link below. I'm thinking the 32 piece set would be fine, but if the 62 piece set were worth it, I would buy it. Thoughts?

Easy to buy, but even easier to make. A couple of old hacksaw blades and some quiet time with a file get you there in short order. Designs available for tension keys all over the web. Spend the time to practice now.

Alternately, there's that fancy gun type which can be had from any lock supply wholesaler just by fabbing up your own locksmith company letterhead.

Check out bump keys. They are supposed to be a lot easier to use than picks and will open most regular locks.

The favorite pick of mine is a snake rake, I'm not one of those james bond types that feels every spring on each pin, I just get in there and start raking. That's how I get into my shed, it has a master lock, and I don't know where the key is. Try it out, it's a blast. I'm still having difficulty with a brinkman "Discus" lock, I think it has segmented pins or mushroom pins.

I dun learned how to pick as a apprentice using hacksaw blades and fish steel for a tension bar. Had a old timer for a journeyman forgot the ladder lock key a lot.

I've thought of it myself, but just haven't gone on and done it. Kinda more worried about keeping MY doors closed than somebody elses open.

When I lost my key, I was able to get into my gunsafe using two small, flat, craft screwdrivers? I don't know much about lock picking, I know alot about locks!

You don't need a set of tools, you need to know how to use the tools. You can make whatever tools you need from found materials. You can bump a lock with a bobby pin, open a combination lock with a pop can, make a bump gun from a coat hanger, etc. But first you have to learn how.

Medeco locks are better than the run-of-the-mill hardware store locks (although it can be a pain to get replacement keys), but are far from pick/bump proof. See:

Re: Lock picking

Most locks can be done with a bump key - I have a set of 15 of them from ukbumpkeys.com, and with a bit of practice they don't even need a "bump" with a screwdriver handle - just a flick with your fingernail. If it fits in the lock, you can generally bump it on the 2nd or third flick. Needless to say, I now have Abloy locks all round. And they just look like normal keys on your keyring unless looked at closely.

Re: Lock picking

Oh, another reason to get good locks - your home insurance will likely not pay out if there is no sign of forced entry. Which there isn't with a bump key. Come home, your stuff is all gone, no payout.
